The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved the first drug to treat a common type of male sexual dysfunction in men.
The drug, which is sold under the brand name Viagra, will treat erectile dysfunction in 50 percent of men.
The drug's label is based on data from a study in theJournal of Sexual Medicine, which found that up to 70 percent of people with erectile dysfunction have a negative impact on sexual relationships.
The drug's makers, Pfizer and Merck, said they will be reviewing the data in the study and will determine the safety and efficacy of the drug in men with erectile dysfunction.
"FDA has determined that the safety and efficacy of sildenafil, a treatment for erectile dysfunction, in healthy adult males with a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction, is not impacted by treatment with nitrates for chest pain," said Janet Woodcock, chief of the Food and Drug Administration's medical research division.
The FDA approval comes on the heels of another major clinical trial, in which more than half of the men studied had a negative impact on their sexual lives.
"There is currently no drug available which can treat erectile dysfunction in the general population, and there is no drug approved to treat sexual dysfunction in men," said Dr. David Heupel, an urology specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
A similar study found that 50 percent of men who took sildenafil had a negative impact on their sexual lives, with those taking the drug for four weeks or more being twice as likely to have a negative impact on their sexual life as those who did not.
A review of the FDA's clinical trials, carried out in January by the National Institutes of Health, found no significant differences between the study and the clinical trials.
However, the study found that men taking the drug had a 40 percent lower risk of being hospitalized or requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission compared to men not taking nitroglycerin.
In a news release from Pfizer, the company said that "we continue to monitor the safety and efficacy of the Viagra," and that it will "continue to evaluate and plan our next steps in the clinical trials" to determine the safety and efficacy of the drug in men with erectile dysfunction.
